Employment opportunities for deficient subjects

In November 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport once again published the updated "Future recruitment opportunities for the public school sector in Baden-Württemberg". The chances of being hired as a grammar school teacher are rated as good to very good, with the combination of subjects being of particular importance. Science and technology is one of the subjects with the best recruitment prospects.

We are very pleased about this, as it will be particularly important in the coming years for grammar schools that want to offer the NwT course level to be able to strengthen their NwT teams with qualified NwT teachers.

Annual celebration NwT 2024

On June 10, 2024, the second, small annual celebration of the NwT studies at KIT took place and we were able to welcome representatives from studies and teaching, alumni and NwT students as well as external partners and representatives from school practice.

In addition to a small award ceremony for graduates of the NwT program, the focus was on the presentation of the NwT teaching awards as well as the exchange and networking around the school and study subject NwT at KIT. An exciting insight into the world of automation technology was provided by the employees of the Institute of Automatic Control Systems (IRS), who presented a demonstration system for mixed reality robotics and invited visitors to try it out.

The evening once again wonderfully showed how diverse and exciting NwT is and that it only works through the cooperation of all those involved Many thanks to all those who are committed to NwT studies and, of course, to everyone who was there and contributed to the success of the wonderful evening.

Welcome to the NwT program at KIT!

We welcome the first semester NwT students and wish them a good start to their teacher training! We are very pleased that you are studying here at KIT.

Especially at the beginning of your studies, the flood of information is often very high and it can be quite challenging to organize and keep track of everything. That's why this year, as part of the mentoring program in cooperation with the ZLB, all first-year students have the opportunity to network with student teachers of their two subjects from the first day onwards, to get helpful tips and tricks from student teachers from higher semesters and to exchange ideas about studying to become a teacher.

Many thanks to the two NwT mentors Hannah and Lukas - it's great that you take the time to support the first semester NwT students in WS23/24!

New Changes in school subject NwT
New Changes in school subject NwT

As announced by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in a press release on 25.01.2023, the school subject NwT will become a standard three-hour basic subject in the course level from the coming school year 2023/2024, i.e. it can be offered by all general education schools with a grammar school upper level, including the oral Abitur examination. Previously, this was only possible at individual grammar schools as part of a school trial.

This means that we need many qualified NwT teachers to teach the subject NwT in the course level. With a degree in NwT, you will be qualified to teach NwT in grades 8-10 and in the course level.

Would you like to become an NwT teacher? Then a NwT teaching degree at KIT might be just the right choice for you!

Annual celebration NwT 2023KIT/Laila Tkotz
Annual celebration NwT 2023

For over 10 years now, NwT can be studied as a teacher training subject at KIT. A good occasion to look back on what we have achieved together since then and to honor everyone's commitment to NwT studies. We did this at the first annual NwT celebration on 13.06.2023 - in triangel.space.

Since the introduction of the NwT degree program, many people from a wide variety of fields have been involved and it is only through this cooperation and discourse over the years that it has been possible to offer such an interdisciplinary degree program at all.

Many thanks to
-Prof. Wanner, the Vice President of KIT for Teaching and Academic Affairs, for his greeting at the anniversary celebration
-Soraya Cornelius and Matthias Eisenmann for the impulse contributions to the NwT study program and the school subject NwT

And of course, many thanks to everyone who was there and contributed to the success of this wonderful evening - NwT students and alumni, KIT employees and our external partners.

Teaching award 2022KIT/Laila Tkotz
Teaching award NwT 2022

Every year, NwT students at KIT are called upon to make suggestions as to which courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in NwT should be awarded the NwT Teaching Prize. The NwT Study Commission has created this symbolic prize to give more visibility to teaching in and for the NwT teaching degree program - because this is where the multipliers of tomorrow's engineering sciences are trained with the NwT students as prospective NwT teachers! Congratulations to all the award winners!

We are already excited to see which course will be awarded the NwT Teaching Prize in 2023!

Interview with Master`s student Evelyn
Interview with Master's student Evelyn

Evelyn is studying NwT in her second master's semester at KIT. We asked her a few questions.

What excites you about NwT?
It is very varied and provides insights into a wide range of natural and technical sciences as well as engineering working methods. It is also very practice-oriented (sometimes you collect insects in the forest, then you build robots).

What speaks for NwT at KIT?
Great atmosphere, cool student teachers, nice projects. The fellow students, the student advisory service and the events are awesome.
At KIT, the degree program and studyability are constantly being improved and the studies are taken seriously. There are also short distances, as all engineering sciences are united on one campus. The campus is also very beautiful, right next to the castle and castle park.

In which combination do you study NwT and is it recommended?
In combination with physics. This is highly recommended as it is well coordinated. I find physics to be the more difficult subject of the two, as exercise sheets have to be completed every week. This is not the case in NwT.

Thank you Evelyn!

Interview with Bachelor student Laura
Interview with Bachelor student Laura

Laura studies NwT at KIT. In the winter semester 22/23, she is the mentor for all first-year NwT students and will be on hand with tips and tricks for your studies. We asked her a few questions.

Why are you studying NwT and in which subject combination?
I'm studying NwT in combination with biology because both subjects were among my favorites at school. What I particularly like about NwT is that you can work much more freely both as a student and as a teacher, implement your own projects and create something with your own hands, whereas in other subjects you only talk about theory.

Your best moment during your studies/teaching?
At school, we once built a "magic light" in NwT. We had to saw, drill, solder, understand circuit diagrams... All things that I wouldn't have dared or wanted to do in the 8th grade. But when we were finished, I was so proud of myself and totally surprised that I really enjoyed it. I discovered a whole new interest back then and since then you can often find me "tinkering" at the workbench. I hope I can awaken this interest in many of my students too.

What topics are particularly important to you in NwT?
Last semester, I attended a seminar on project planning in NwT lessons, which also focused a lot on the personal development of the students. This is particularly important to me, because NwT is one of the few subjects in which students have the opportunity not only to take away content, but above all to grow in their personality, because they learn a lot about teamwork, responsibility and personal initiative through the increasingly self-managed projects.

Thank you Laura!

Interview with alumnus Thomas
Interview with alumnus Thomas

Thomas studied NwT at @kitkarlsruhe and now works as an NwT teacher. We asked him a few questions.

Why did you study NwT and in which subject combination?
When I started my teaching degree, I didn't even know that NwT existed. I heard about it for the first time during my practical semester and was therefore able to sit in on a few lessons. With my affinity for technology, I immediately felt comfortable in the subject and even switched from physics/mathematics to physics/NwT in the course of the following semester.

One of your best moments during your studies/teaching?
I was allowed to teach a loan class with the Arduino during my traineeship. Two students told me firmly: "We have no idea about it, you don't have to try to teach us." The rest of the class continued to work independently with the learning aid and I sat down with them. After 10 minutes, they managed to get their first LED to flash. They were stunned that they managed to do this. From this lesson onwards, they actively and happily participated in every subsequent lesson. That was great.

What topics are particularly important to you in NwT?
Arduino has become a bit of a hobbyhorse of mine, which I also enjoy doing in my private life. But it's a subject that is infinitely important and that isn't really covered in any other subject: Project documentation!
The university and the world of work constantly demand it later on, and outside of NwT lessons, students write little to no non-fiction texts. With increasing experience, I was able to observe an enormous increase in competence among the students. They will no longer need a lot of things from school later on, but writing documentation will accompany them throughout their lives.

Thank you Thomas!
